Too Fast To Last
Longtime readers know I’m a big fan of Scout Gillett, whom I first discovered via her beguiling cover of Broadcast’s “Come On, Let’s Go.” I had her first full-length, 2022’s No Roof No Floor, on very heavy rotation for a couple of months after its release. Gillett has one of my favorite voices in the biz, transitioning from soft and plaintive to powerfully desperate with natural ease. I listen to a lot of music, and it seems more and more rare that I can easily identify a particular vocalist so quickly.
“Too Fast To Last” is the first track on the upcoming Tough Touch. It starts like a classic track from The Cars, with chunking guitars rapidly buttressed by oversaturated keyboards. The distinctive vocals reveal themselves fully on the chorus. The track has a bit more polished sound than her previous recordings. The video sees Gillett wandering the streets of what I assume is her home city of LA and brings to mind similar scenes she shot for previous videos when she was living in Brooklyn, NY.
